Panorama 6 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or above, and runs natively on both Intel and PowerPC processors. A Windows version will be available soon.

The Panorama 6 software is complete for OS X, but it is not yet available for Windows. Also, the 6.0 changes have not yet been integrated into the Panorama PDF documentation (however, documentation for the new features is available online at Welcome to Panorama 6). When these tasks are complete we will release the final version.

We don't believe you'll want to do that for long, but yes, this is possible. Just make sure to move or rename the Panorama 5.5 folder (in the Applications folder) before installing Panorama 6.

With multiple copies of Panorama on your system -- what version of Panorama will run when you double click on a database? There are a couple of solutions to this question. You can use the Get Info window (in the Finder) to specify which application will run on a database by database basis. Another option is to keep all of your copies of Panorama in the dock, and simply drag the database to the Panorama version you want to use.

Total Recall works seamlessly on Panorama Enterprise clients. If Panorama crashes with one or more shared databases open, these databases will re-open when Panorama relaunches, just like any other database. Assuming that the same network connections are active that were operating at the time of the crash, the databases will automatically re-connect to the server using the same session information they were using before. Just as with a single user database, it's as if nothing had ever happened. (Total Recall is quite fast at restoring the connection — so fast that we think some users will be tempted to crash Panorama on purpose instead of quitting Panorama. Theoretically that should work, but at least for now we don't think that is a great idea – please don't call us for support if you try this and have problems. On the other hand, if you try it and don't have problems, we'd like to hear about that!)

Total Recall is disabled on Panorama Server (it has it's own journalling system).

If you are using Mac OS X you can simply select a range of cells in your spreadsheet and drag them to Panorama. If you want to create a new database, drag the cells to the New Database wizard. If you want to import the cells into an existing database, simply drag them onto the data sheet (you can also open the Text Import wizard and drag the cells onto that).

If you are using Windows then you cannot drag the cells onto Panorama. Instead, copy them into the clipboard and then use the Clipboard commands in either the New Database wizard or the Text Import wizard (this will work on the Mac also).

There's been a lot of discussion over the past few months about Panorama icons in Snow Leopard. The short story is that with Panorama 6 installed, all of the icons look great in Snow Leopard. We even have new high resolution icons that look great in your dock and in Coverflow.



The longer story is that it appears that the icon problem was related to the fact that Panorama 5.5 (and earlier) used an application format called PEF. This is an older format that worked with both OS 9 and OS X. As far as I can tell Apple hasn't officially dropped support for PEF, and PEF applications run fine on Snow Leopard. However, apparently the Snow Leopard Finder has an intermittent bug in recognizing icons in a PEF application. (For some of you it wasn't so intermittent, but others never saw the problem at all.) Who knows, perhaps someday Apple will fix this bug and Panorama 5.5 icons will work reliably in Snow Leopard. Don't bet the house on it.

Panorama 6 uses a newer, OS X only application format called Mach-O. (Because of this, you'll also notice that the program is now called Panorama.app instead of just Panorama.) The Snow Leopard Finder recognizes icons in Mach-O applications every time, so even though the actual bug isn't fixed, it will no longer be an issue for Panorama 6 users.

Open the Programming Assistant (in a procedure either by control clicking or by pressing Command-', in a dialog by choosing Assist from the Formula menu). Choose a lookup function and press Insert. The Lookup Wizard will appear.

If you've been using Panorama for twenty years and your fingers press Command-C-F-V by themselves, we've got you covered. Open Wizards -> Preferences -> General Preferences and check the Use "Classic" Menus option. With this option turned on most menus and dialogs revert back to Panorama 5.5. (This doesn't affect other Panorama 6 features, including Total Recall, Time Lapse, right click context menus, Import/Export wizards, splitting and merging fields, etc.

If you are using a server computer with an Intel processor, 6.0 is much faster. For database sharing, switching both the client and server to 6.0 can be up to 8 times faster. (However, Panorama 6.0 on a PowerPC server is not any faster, and at this time there is little reason to upgrade to Panorama Enterprise 6.0 if you are using a PowerPC processor.)

Yes, but you must make sure that your filenames end with .pan, for example Contacts.pan or Banking.pan. As long as your database filenames end with the .pan extension your files will be recognized as Panorama databases on any system that uses DropBox and has Panorama 6 installed. The icons will be correct and you'll be able to open your databases normally. However, as with any other application, be careful not to open the same database on more than one computer at a time. DropBox will allow this, but this is a recipe for losing data due to conflicts. If you need to access the same database on multiple machines you'll need to use Panorama Enterprise.
