What are the system requirements for Panorama 6?
Panorama 6 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or above, and
runs natively on both Intel and PowerPC
processors. A Windows version will be available
soon.
-
Is Panorama 6 Snow Leopard Compatible?
Yes, Panorama is 100% compatible with Mac OS X
10.6 (Snow Leopard). Unlike Panorama 5.5,
Panorama 6 is fully Intel native so Rosetta is
not required. Some users reported problems
displaying icons on Snow Leopard with previous
versions of Panorama, this issue does not occur
when using Panorama 6.
-
Is Panorama compatible with my existing
databases?
Yes. Panorama 6 is compatible with any database
created with any previous version of Panorama.
Databases that have been saved in Panorama 6 can
also be opened with Panorama 5.5.
-
How do I download and install Panorama 6?
Click
here to download
Panorama 6. Once it is downloaded, double
click on the Install Panorama icon and
follow the on-screen instructions. (Note:
Make sure your previous copy of Panorama is
not running when you try to install the new
version.)
-
How do I purchase Panorama 6?
Use our
online shopping
cart to purchase new copies of Panorama
6 or to upgrade from an earlier version.
-
Will my personal use license continue to work
with Panorama 6?
Yes, it will continue to work exactly as before.
The renewal date of the Personal Use License is
not affected by the upgrade.
-
Why is Panorama 6 a "Preview Version"?
The Panorama 6 software is complete for OS X, but
it is not yet available for Windows. Also, the
6.0 changes have not yet been integrated into the
Panorama PDF documentation (however,
documentation for the new features is available
online at
Welcome to Panorama 6).
When these tasks are complete we will
release the final version.
-
Is Panorama 6 faster than Panorama 5.5?
If you are using an Macintosh with an Intel
processor, Panorama 6 will be up to 5 times
faster than Panorama V or 5.5. In addition, since
Rosetta is no longer required, your entire system
will run faster and Panorama will launch up to
10x faster.
On PowerPC based Macintosh Panorama 6 runs at
about the same speed as earlier versions.
-
Can I use both Panorama 5.5 and Panorama 6.0 on
the same system?
We don't believe you'll want to do that for long,
but yes, this is possible. Just make sure to move
or rename the Panorama 5.5 folder (in the
Applications folder) before installing Panorama
6.
With multiple copies of Panorama on your system
-- what version of Panorama will run when you
double click on a database? There are a couple of
solutions to this question. You can use
the Get
Info window
(in the Finder) to specify which application will
run on a database by database basis. Another
option is to keep all of your copies of Panorama
in the dock, and simply drag the database to the
Panorama version you want to use.

How does Total Recall work?
Total Recall
is a new feature that allows Panorama to recover
after a crash -- whether due to a power outage,
hardware problem, system crash, or Panorama bug
(never!). When Panorama is relaunched after a
crash it automatically restores everything just
as you left it -- all open files, open windows,
etc. Only the last few seconds of work will be
lost. It's almost as if nothing has happened at
all — you can just continue with your work as if
nothing had happened.
Total Recall works by periodically saving all of
Panorama's RAM to disk. It uses the fastest
possible technique for this, so in most cases
you'll never even notice this is happening. To
adjust how often periodic saves occur, use
the
Total Recall
wizard (in the Wizards->Preferences submenu).
When you relaunch Panorama after a crash it will
ask you whether you want to resume where you left
off.

Total Recall does not affect normal file saving,
so if you have unsaved changes when the crash
occurs, they will still be unsaved when Panorama
is restored (in other words, Revert to Saved can
still be used after the crash/restore cycle).
Panorama will even restore any work you've done
in a new database that has never been saved!
-
How does Total Recall work with Panorama
Enterprise?
Total Recall works seamlessly on Panorama
Enterprise clients. If Panorama crashes with one
or more shared databases open, these databases
will re-open when Panorama relaunches, just like
any other database. Assuming that the same
network connections are active that were
operating at the time of the crash, the databases
will automatically re-connect to the server using
the same session information they were using
before. Just as with a single user database, it's
as if nothing had ever happened. (Total Recall is
quite fast at restoring the connection — so fast
that we think some users will be tempted to crash
Panorama on purpose instead of quitting Panorama.
Theoretically that should work, but at least for
now we don't think that is a great idea –
please don't call us for support if you try
this and have problems. On the other hand, if you
try it and don't have problems, we'd like to hear
about that!)
Total Recall is disabled on Panorama Server (it
has it's own journalling system).
-
How does Time Lapse work?
Panorama's new Time
Lapse
feature is like “Revert to Saved” on steroids.
It's also a bit like Apple's Time Machine feature
but optimized for recovery from recent mistakes
rather than for long term backup. With Time Lapse
you can “revert” to previous versions of your
database made earlier today or at various times
in the past. Panorama allows this by making an
extra copy (called a "slice") of the database
every time you save. By default Panorama keeps up
to 25 slices of previous versions of the
database.
In addition to doing a full revert, you can also
selectively revert only the data, only the
procedures, or only the forms. You can also open
previous versions of the database (called
"slices") in separate windows so that you can
compare them with the current database or even
copy and paste data, code or form objects between
versions. Time Lapse uses a monthly calendar
format for navigation of the slices saved for
each database.
-
How do I import from Excel or Numbers?
If you are using Mac OS X you can simply select a
range of cells in your spreadsheet and drag them
to Panorama. If you want to create a new
database, drag the cells to the New Database
wizard. If you want to import the cells into an
existing database, simply drag them onto the data
sheet (you can also open the Text Import wizard
and drag the cells onto that).
If you are using Windows then you cannot drag the
cells onto Panorama. Instead, copy them into the
clipboard and then use the Clipboard commands in
either the New Database wizard or the Text Import
wizard (this will work on the Mac also).
-
How do I export to Excel or Numbers?
The first step is to open the Text Export wizard
and configure the columns you want to export.
Then if you are using Mac OS X you can simply
drag the Export Text icon onto the spreadsheet.
If you are using Windows then use the
Export->Export to Clipboard menu command, then
paste the cells into the spreadsheet (this will
also work on OS X).
-
Are you sure the icons will work on my Snow
Leopard system?
There's been a lot of discussion over the past
few months about Panorama icons in Snow Leopard.
The short story is that with Panorama 6
installed, all of the icons look great in Snow
Leopard. We even have new high resolution icons
that look great in your dock and in Coverflow.
The longer story is that it appears that the icon
problem was related to the fact that Panorama 5.5
(and earlier) used an application format called
PEF. This is an older format that worked with
both OS 9 and OS X. As far as I can tell Apple
hasn't officially dropped support for PEF, and
PEF applications run fine on Snow Leopard.
However, apparently the Snow Leopard Finder has
an intermittent bug in recognizing icons in a PEF
application. (For some of you it wasn't so
intermittent, but others never saw the problem at
all.) Who knows, perhaps someday Apple will fix
this bug and Panorama 5.5 icons will work
reliably in Snow Leopard. Don't bet the house on
it.
Panorama 6 uses a newer, OS X only application
format called Mach-O. (Because of this, you'll
also notice that the program is now called
Panorama.app instead of just Panorama.) The Snow
Leopard Finder recognizes icons in Mach-O
applications every time, so even though the
actual bug isn't fixed, it will no longer be an
issue for Panorama 6 users.
-
How do I select additional records?
One method is simply to change "All of the
Following are true" to "Any of the Following are
true" and then add more criteria.
You can also change "All of the Following are
true" to "Any of the Following are true", then
pick "Entire Record" instead of
"Any field contains" and then pick "is already
selected". Then press the + button and choose
your additional criteria.
-
Where is the Lookup Wizard?
Open the Programming Assistant (in a
procedure either by control clicking or by
pressing Command-', in a dialog by choosing
Assist from the Formula menu). Choose a lookup
function and press Insert. The
Lookup Wizard will appear.
-
Why isn't Time Lapse working?
Time Lapse only works on databases that are in
your user folder. If a database is in another
location (on an external drive, for example) you
must move the database into your user folder if
you want to use the Time Lapse feature.
-
I'm used to the way Panorama's menus and dialogs
used to work, can I still do that?
If you've been using Panorama for twenty years
and your fingers press Command-C-F-V by
themselves, we've got you covered. Open
Wizards -> Preferences -> General
Preferences and check the Use "Classic"
Menus option. With this option turned on most
menus and dialogs revert back to Panorama 5.5.
(This doesn't affect other Panorama 6 features,
including Total Recall, Time Lapse, right click
context menus, Import/Export wizards, splitting
and merging fields, etc.
-
How does Panorama 6 calculate automatic field
widths?
Panorama allows you to adjust column widths in
the data sheet simply by dragging left or right
on the column heading. Panorama 6 adds new
commands for automatically calculating the field
width based on the data in the field. This is
especially useful after you've imported new data
or made major changes to a field with a formula
or other manipulation.
The commands for automatically adjusting column
widths are found in the
Setup
menu. To set the field width, Panorama calculates
the average width of entries in the field, and
then sets the width to 120% of that value. For
most fields this should be close to the optimum
width, but of course you can always make your own
manual adjustments.
-
How is Panorama Enterprise 6.0 different from
5.0?
If you are using a server computer with an Intel
processor, 6.0 is much faster. For database
sharing, switching both the client and server to
6.0 can be up to 8 times faster. (However,
Panorama 6.0 on a PowerPC server is not any
faster, and at this time there is little reason
to upgrade to Panorama Enterprise 6.0 if you are
using a PowerPC processor.)
-
Can I mix Panorama 5.5 and 6.0 on a Panorama
Enterprise network?
Yes. You can use Panorama 6.0 clients with a
Panorama 5.5 server, Panorama 5.5 clients with a
Panorama 6.0 server, or any other combination.
-
Will Panorama 6 work with DropBox?
Yes, but you must make sure that your filenames
end with .pan, for example
Contacts.pan
or
Banking.pan. As long as your database
filenames end with the .pan extension your files
will be recognized as Panorama databases on any
system that uses DropBox and has Panorama 6
installed. The icons will be correct and you'll
be able to open your databases normally. However,
as with any other application, be careful not to
open the same database on more than one computer
at a time. DropBox will allow this, but this is a
recipe for losing data due to conflicts. If you
need to access the same database on multiple
machines you'll need to use
Panorama
Enterprise.
-
Does Panorama 6 support Unicode text?
Unicode text is not supported.
-
Can I process credit card transactions with
Panorama 6?
