Using the Growl Notification System

If the Growl notification system is installed and running on your system, Track Magic will make extensive use of it to inform you of progress, status and problems as it interacts with Rails. You’ll find that Track Magic operation is much smoother with Growl installed — it almost completely eliminates alert dialogs that have to be manually dismissed. A typical Growl notification from Track Magic is shown in the upper right hand corner below. As you can see, the notification fades away automatically after a few seconds. (Remember, you can click to enlarge any of the images of in this documentation.)

Here is the exact same notification, but without Growl installed. Without Growl installed, Track Magic uses a standard alert, so you have to click the Ok button or press the Return key to dismiss the notification.

If you are not already familiar with Growl, it is a terrific free program (donations accepted) that lets Mac OS X applications unintrusively tell you when things happen. ProVUE Development has no official connection or affiliation with the Growl team, but we think Growl is an indispensible application and it is one of the first programs we install when we get a new computer. It’s very easy to install and only takes a few minutes. If you haven't already, take a few minutes and install Growl now — you’ll be glad you did. (You don’t need to relauch Track Magic… it will automatically detect when Growl is installed.)
